History 111 offers a broad chronological overview of U.S. History which deals with political, economic, social, and cultural development from the Pre Columbian period through post-Civil War Reconstruction (c. 1876). Attention is focused on differing historical interpretations and on themes which illuminate current events. This course serves as partial fulfillment of the social science requirement for A.A. and A.S. degrees and is transferrable to regional four-year institutions. Lecture: 3 hours per week

History 111 is an introductory survey of United States history of the indigenous population before discovery through Reconstruction. The objectives of this course are to ensure that students can identify the persons involved and the events that transpired, recognize the major themes (be they political, social, economic, or cultural) that shaped America up through the Reconstruction period, and most importantly, to comprehend why/how those themes occurred and what influenced citizens in the past to act as they did. Among the specific outcomes, students should be able to: the motives for European migration to the Americas, reasons for European development of the Americas (especially North America), colonial American separation from England, the slow but steady development of a sectional crisis, reasons for the Civil War, its progress, and the reason why Reconstruction was carried out the way it was by the northern government. Although this course is primarily designed for those pursuing an academic degree, the importance placed on critical thinking, the ability to weigh a variety of facts/evidence, and effective communicating (both in writing and verbally) will only help anyone in their daily lives and professional future. History 111 directly and indirectly pursues many of the General Education Abilities, especially points 1 (Critical/Creative Thinking), 2 (Communication), 4 (Historical, Cultural, Environmental Awareness), and 7(Information Literacy).

In compliance with the expectation that uniform student competencies be stated in all North Idaho College History syllabi, the following uniform outcomes are included:

The student should be geographically literate, that is able to locate the sites of significant historical events and to explain their geopolitical significance.

The student should be able to identify important historical individuals and their roles in history.

The student should be able to cite the causes and effects of significant historical events and their connections to subsequent events.

The student should be able to identify significant historical ideas and issues and their connections to subsequent developments.

The student should be able to synthesize information as demonstrated by competence in the following:

The ability to form value judgments or conclusions based on information
The ability to discriminate between fact and opinion
The ability to gain access to historical information required to arrive at and support conclusions
The ability to articulate conclusions in both written and spoken word

Exams 60%

Two proctored online exams (the final will be comprehensive) consisting of multiple-choice and essay types of questions. Exams will not be available before or after the scheduled days of availability. Missing an exam will result in the loss of the offered points.

Assignments 20%

 2 Voices of Freedom assignments will be required. The specific documents involved and associated questions will be provided at the online class site.

VOF assignments are to be submitted online and will due at 11:59 PM on the scheduled Friday (see course schedule). If a deadline is missed, then all points will be sacrificed without a make-up  opportunity; deadline extensions will not be available. An assignment may be submitted early, e.g. the Monday just prior to the Friday deadline.

Participation in 6 of the group activities offered at the Monday meetings are required. Participation in one additional activity will be accepted for extra points. Details will be provided in class, there will be no opportunity for make-ups and deadline extensions.

Quizzes 10%

 15 quizzes corresponding to each of the textbook's chapters will be offered. The top 14 scores out of the 15 will be used for grade calculations (the lowest score will be dropped). Deadline extensions will not be offered. However, since the lowest score is dropped, a zero resulting from a missed quiz can be considered as the low score. Quizzes are due online on Fridays at 11:59 PM.

Students are referred to the course schedule for specific deadline dates and can expect true/false, matching, and sequencing types of questions. They will have time limits, must be completed once started, and backtracking will not be available.

Students are encouraged to take the quizzes without any supporting help, i.e. closed book and without notes or any other assistance, so as to help them gauge the progression of their understanding and learning of the material.

Forums 10%

Participation in at least 5 online discussion forums will be required out of at least 8 weekly offerings. Since the number of offered forums exceeds the number required, deadline extensions will not be an option. Submissions are due each Friday at 11:59 PM.

Course Policies

General Responsibilities

The instructor will provide guidance, feedback, learning activities, and will evaluate student learning.
Student responsibilities include (but are not necessarily limited to): meeting all course deadlines, following all instructions, seeking help when needed, achieving their ultimate learning goals.

Exam Proctors

The two exams must be proctored by the NIC Testing Center or one of the Outreach offices. Students are responsible for being aware of their availability hours and for scheduling appointments. Extensions to the scheduled exam deadlines will not be an option.

Collaboration/Plagiarism/Outside Sources/Quotes

Students are expected to submit only their own work. All work should be based only on the material provided in the course textbook and reader. Work submitted that suggests non-approved collaboration with others, plagiarism, and the use of an outside non-approved source risks the loss of all available points for that particular activity. Students are required to summarize the material obtained from the textbook and reader in their own words. The inclusion of quotations can result in the loss of points.

Work Quality

A reduction of points for any given activity can occur for multiple errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. Students are encouraged to refer to the textbook for correct spelling and capitalization, consult dictionaries, and use spell-check programs before submission of their work.


Language in the classroom, including the "virtual" classroom, is expected to be civil and respectful toward all others. Language deemed as inappropriate by the instructor can result in the offending student being asked to leave the classroom and/or being banned from online forums with a sacrifice of potential activity's points.


Feedback may be provided for some manually-graded activities. The feedback will frequently consist of questions to encourage further thought by the student and do not necessarily require a response. However, a student may respond if they wish to engage in discussion and, in some cases, the instructor may specifically request a response.

Technical Problems

All students are required to have a reliable working computer and access to the internet throughout the semester. A computer or internet-related problem that interferes with meeting a Friday night submission deadline does not automatically result in an extension of the deadline. To avoid that possibility and the potential loss of points, students are encouraged to submit activities before the night of the deadline.

Response/Turn-Around Times

Responses to student email inquiries can be expected within 24-48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) depending on the specific day and time that an email is received. The instructor is not available weekends and holidays. Scores and feedback for manually-graded activities can be expected within one week of an activity's deadline.


The reoccurring  course activities, such as forums and quizzes, are due no later than 11:59 pm of their respective chapter's Friday deadline. VOF assignments will involve multiple chapters and will be due on Fridays as scheduled below. Extensions will not be offered for missed deadlines.
Early submissions are encouraged so as to avoid the possibility of a "last minute" technical crisis.
The exams will be made available only during the scheduled exam days.


Laptop computers (or any other electronic devices) will not be permitted during Monday lecutures. Note-taking should be done by hand and then transferred to a computer if desired.

Cell Phones

Cell phone "ring tones" should be turned off during class time.


Role will be taken each Monday meeting before and after the break.


A break will occur during each Monday meeting usually at the half-way point. Students are asked to use the breaks to care of those needs that would otherwise be disruptive to the session, e.g. restroom use, pencil sharpening, updating phone messages, throwing away trash, etc.


All activities are due no later than 11:59 PM of their deadline date. Deadline extensions will not be offered for late submissions.

To withdraw from all courses a student must obtain a college withdrawal form from the Registrar's Office, secure the signatures of those persons indicated on the form, and return the form to the Registrar's office. No student may withdraw from the college after the final date of withdrawal from courses except for compelling and extraordinary reasons. In such circumstances a student must petition the Admissions and Academic Standards Committee for late withdrawal from college using the college withdrawal form available in the Registrar's Office.

Student Code of Conduct

The Student Code of Conduct applies to any student enrolled at North Idaho College.  This includes, but is not limited to, face-to-face classes and Internet classes.

As students undertake to fulfill the obligations and duties outlined in this document, the college community of which they are a part undertakes to respect the basic freedoms of students. In recognition of students’ rights and dignity as members of the college, North Idaho College is committed to the principles found in the NIC Student Handbook.

Center for Educational Access/Disability Support Services

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504/508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, North Idaho College provides accommodations to eligible students who experience barriers in the educational setting due to learning, emotional / mental, physical, visual, or hearing disabilities.  Instructors will provide accommodations to students only after having received a Letter of Accommodation from the Center for Educational Access.

Instructor-Initiated Withdrawal: Instructors have the right to withdraw students for academic reasons up until the same date; in doing so, instructors must notify students through NIC e-mail within 48 hours of submitting documentation to the Registrar's office, and students have the right to appeal the instructor's decision. For more information, see the NIC Procedure:

An incomplete is assigned only if the student has been in attendance and has done satisfactory work to within three weeks of the end of the semester (or proportional length of time for a course of less than a semester in length).  Incompletes are issued only in cases of extenuating circumstances, such as severe illness or injury.  Incompletes are not issued in cases in which the student is simply unable to complete his/her work within the specified semester or session.  If a final grade of "I" is recorded, the instructor will indicate in writing to the Registrar what the student must do to make up the deficiency.  The instructor will indicate in the written statement what permanent grade should be entered if the Incomplete is not removed by the deadline.

All incomplete grades must be removed within six weeks after the first class day of the following term, excluding the summer session.  If the Incomplete is not removed by that date, the grade reverts to the grade indicated by the instructor's written statement authorizing the incomplete.

Institutional Statement

DROP FOR NON-PAYMENT:  By registering at North Idaho College, you agree to provide payment by the due dates. You will be dropped from classes if payment is not received by  5 p.m. Pacific Time on the third day of the semester. Students on the waitlist will be given the option to register for classes after students are dropped for non-payment.

REMOVAL FROM CLASS FOR NON-ATTENDANCE:  Attendance is based on your participation in this class. Failure to attend may result in your being removed from this class and may result in your financial aid award being reduced. You are responsible for confirming the accuracy of your attendance record.
