GDES-222 is a continuation of GDES 221. It is designed to give the student more hands-on experiences in developing skills with tools, materials, and professional methods for creating professional visuals. The student will learn to incorporate research, illustrations, and other graphics necessary to complete packaging, advertising proposals, and then present results individually and as a group. Continued emphasis is placed on computer applications and on assigned projects. This course is helpful in building visual literacy, expanding conceptual and technical skills, and improving creative problem solving. Lecture: 3 hours per week Lab: 1 hour per week


Every effort has been made to keep material costs to a minimum for the requirements of this course. All computer hardware and software are provided by NIC. You must be willing and able to purchase textbooks, computer disks and other supplies including but not limited to:

You are required to participate in all classroom activities. To do this, you must be familiar with appropriate textbook material before class meetings. If you need extra time, the computer lab is open for homework. Generally expect to spend 5 hours extra in the lab to practice your skills.

Studio Projects:
During the semester, a series of class projects and questions will be assigned. For assessment, each of the assignments is to be submitted on the due date. Grades are determined by correctly answered questions, the quality of submitted work, the ability to follow directions, and good old-fashioned effort.

Deadlines are the life-blood of professional graphic design. In this learning environment we will emphasize commitment to deadline schedules. Projects are due by the end of class on any given date. Any late assignments (other than excused absences) will automatically be reduced in value by half. This works very much the same way in real life. With very few exceptions, acceptable work delivered on time is worth more than miraculous work delivered late.

Course Design
The course sequence and pace may be altered to improve the learning potential of all class members. Students will be notified if, in the instructor’s professional judgment, course restructuring is warranted.


If it is necessary for you to be absent from class, you must email me with a detailed message. Please, not 10 minutes before class starts or a day after!

  • Please keep instructor informed of reasons for absence.
  • Do not schedule other appointments during our regular class hours.
  • Do not leave messages with the office. Call me directly.
  • Excused or unexcused absence status is at the discretion of the instructor.
  • Absences have an effect on your grade and your ability to successfully learn in our class.
10 minutes late = 1 tardy 
3 tardy = 1 absence
3 absences in semester = 1 grade drop
3 absences in succession = suggestion from your instructor to drop this class.

All missed class information, including assignments, are the student’s responsibility to fulfill and must be made up with reasonable promptness as determined by the instructor and the student.

Your class related performances will be evaluated both objectively and subjectively to yield point totals. These point totals will be combined to yield a letter grade for the course: “A”, “B”; etc. Please check with your instructor any time you have any questions related to your standing in this class.

Instructor-Initiated Withdrawal: Instructors have the right to withdraw students for academic reasons up until the same date; in doing so, instructors must notify students through NIC e-mail within 48 hours of submitting documentation to the Registrar's office, and students have the right to appeal the instructor's decision. For more information, see the NIC Procedure:

An incomplete is assigned only if the student has been in attendance and has done satisfactory work to within three weeks of the end of the semester (or proportional length of time for a course of less than a semester in length).  Incompletes are issued only in cases of extenuating circumstances, such as severe illness or injury.  Incompletes are not issued in cases in which the student is simply unable to complete his/her work within the specified semester or session.  If a final grade of "I" is recorded, the instructor will indicate in writing to the Registrar what the student must do to make up the deficiency.  The instructor will indicate in the written statement what permanent grade should be entered if the Incomplete is not removed by the deadline.

All incomplete grades must be removed within six weeks after the first class day of the following term, excluding the summer session.  If the Incomplete is not removed by that date, the grade reverts to the grade indicated by the instructor's written statement authorizing the incomplete.

DROP FOR NON-PAYMENT:  By registering at North Idaho College, you agree to provide payment by the due dates. You will be dropped from classes if payment is not received by  5 p.m. Pacific Time on the third day of the semester. Students on the waitlist will be given the option to register for classes after students are dropped for non-payment.

DROP FOR NON-ATTENDANCE:  You must attend and participate in the first week of this class. Failure to do so will result in your being dropped from this class and may result in your financial aid award being reduced. For Internet classes, attendance is based on participation in an instructional activity; you must complete the first week’s assignment(s) by the assignment due date. Drop for non-attendance occurs at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on the second Tuesday of the semester.
