This course is designed to provide information about drugs, their effects, and the laws and social implications relative to them. Students will learn about the causes of drug abuse, treatment modalities, community resources, alternatives, and problem solving skills. Lecture: 3 hours per week

Upon completion of this course, students will demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of:

  1. The history of drug taking behavior
  2. The neurological etiology and implications of drug abuse & dependence
  3. The distinguishing features between drug use and drug abuse/dependence
  4. The distinctions between the various drug types
  5. The psychological/social theories and treatment of drug taking behavior
  6. Social implications of drug taking behavior
  7. Personal values and ethics pertaining to one's own choices with drug taking/abstaining behavior through critical thinking and group discussion
  8. Local agencies and sources available for drug information and referral


Syllabus Quiz

Your first task for this course outside of class time is to log on to the ANGEL site and complete the Syllabus Quiz (located in the Lessons tab). You must complete this quiz in order to be able to take the first examination.


There will be five exams. These exams will be worth 40 points each.  Each of these exams will cover only the material presented in that test section. The exam items will be multiple-choice, True/False format and essay format.  Exam questions will include information presented across all learning activities covered in class and in online presentations, all homework assignments and any assigned readings.

























Graded Activities

There will be 5 graded assignments worth a total of 50 points.  These assignments should be completed (and turned in) on time. No late work will be accepted.

Extra Credit

A total of 25 points extra credit can be earned by choosing from a variety of extra credit activities. Extra credit will be graded prior to midterm and final exam. All extra credit is due by Friday of the 16th week of the semester. Extra credit is largely graded on the basis of effort. Short answers and a lack of critical thinking will receive reduced credit.

Final Grade Calculation

Your final grade will be based on the number of points earned in this course (not a percentage). Review the following chart to determine the cut-off scores for the various letter grade standards.  Midterm grades will be calculated using the percentages in the far right column, since progress may vary.

Course Policies


As students and future professionals it is your responsibility to attend class.  While I do not give points for attendance, absences will impact your grade by interfering with learning time and the regular schedule of a responsible adult.  People who attend class earn higher grades!  Assignments are due whether you attend class or not (unless there is a medical excuse).  Since most of the Graded activities must be typed, you should email them to me when you must miss a class.

                  Attendance on scheduled exam dates is required.

            If you have a legitimate reason for missing an exam at the scheduled time you MUST:

1. Contact the instructor BEFORE the scheduled exam, or within a reasonable time period given the circumstances (as determined by the instructor)

2. Take a make-up exam with 72 hours of the original scheduled test.

The instructor has the right to change the format and content of the make-up test.  If you have not followed the procedures above and you miss an exam you will not be permitted to make-up the exam earning a zero as your exam grade.

Class Participation

Your participation in classroom discussions and activities is a vital part of the learning experience.  I encourage you to ask questions and pursue topics which you find interesting or difficult to master.  I also encourage you to voice personal experience and knowledge to help incorporate practical applications into the lectures and activities. You should keep in mind that confidentiality of the information shared cannot be guaranteed. This is not, however, a venue for the expression of attitudes and values that are disruptive to the learning environment (e.g. threatening, harassing). Students who are disruptive or disrespectful will be dismissed from class for the duration of that day, will be counted as absent that day and will be reported to the campus judiciary. The judiciary will determine whether the occurrence warrants further action. 

Courtesy and Respect

Out of courtesy and respect for your fellow students and the instructor please turn off your cell phones before class begins. The use of cell phones during class (this includes text messaging) is prohibited. Class time is time spent engaged in class and disruptions will not be tolerated. If your professional or personal life necessitates constant contact then see your instructor to make special arrangements (at the instructor’s discretion). Cell phone use during class will result in one warning; further infractions will mean being told to leave class.

Show respect for the instructor and your fellow students by speaking only as part of class discussions and not in private conversations during class time.  If you need to have a conversation concerning things other than the class topic, I would prefer that you left the classroom. You will receive one warning; if you continue to disrupt class you will be dismissed.

Laptop computers are allowed in class only for use as a note-taking tool. The use of a computer for activities not related to the class discussion is prohibited. Violation of this rule will result in revocation of your computer use privileges. 


Exams will be taken at approximately 3 week intervals, but some variation occurs. Exams dates will be announced one week in advance. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of test dates.

To withdraw from all courses a student must obtain a college withdrawal form from the Registrar's Office, secure the signatures of those persons indicated on the form, and return the form to the Registrar's office. No student may withdraw from the college after the final date of withdrawal from courses except for compelling and extraordinary reasons. In such circumstances a student must petition the Admissions and Academic Standards Committee for late withdrawal from college using the college withdrawal form available in the Registrar's Office.

Center for Educational Access/Disability Support Services

Instructor-Initiated Withdrawal: Instructors have the right to withdraw students for academic reasons up until the same date; in doing so, instructors must notify students through NIC e-mail within 48 hours of submitting documentation to the Registrar's office, and students have the right to appeal the instructor's decision. For more information, see the NIC Procedure:

An incomplete is assigned only if the student has been in attendance and has done satisfactory work to within three weeks of the end of the semester (or proportional length of time for a course of less than a semester in length).  Incompletes are issued only in cases of extenuating circumstances, such as severe illness or injury.  Incompletes are not issued in cases in which the student is simply unable to complete his/her work within the specified semester or session.  If a final grade of "I" is recorded, the instructor will indicate in writing to the Registrar what the student must do to make up the deficiency.  The instructor will indicate in the written statement what permanent grade should be entered if the Incomplete is not removed by the deadline.

All incomplete grades must be removed within six weeks after the first class day of the following term, excluding the summer session.  If the Incomplete is not removed by that date, the grade reverts to the grade indicated by the instructor's written statement authorizing the incomplete.

Institutional Statement

DROP FOR NON-PAYMENT:  By registering at North Idaho College, you agree to provide payment by the due dates. You will be dropped from classes if payment is not received by  5 p.m. Pacific Time on the third day of the semester. Students on the waitlist will be given the option to register for classes after students are dropped for non-payment.
