Exterior and Interior Renovation offers classroom introduction to basic automotive refinishing and primarily covers automotive detailing. Automotive finishes, products used, and techniques will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on prewash, exterior polish, and interior renovation of "live" customer vehicles. Health and safety issues will also be covered. Lecture: 1 hour per week for 2 weeks

Students’ progress toward successful achievement of the learning outcomes will be monitored and recorded on a regular basis throughout the school year. Students will be evaluated according to the attached rating scale. The scale for the classroom portion is measured using tests, student attitude, participation, and attendance. A similar rating scale is used in the lab setting where students’ quality of work, work habits, attitude, attendance, and tool care will be rated. A complete competency profile will be provided for each graduating student along with a certificate of program completion.


Grades are assigned based on scores received on quizzes, assigned chapter questions, class participation, reports, tests, and comprehensive final exam. The compilation of these assignments, minus excessive absences beyond what is allowed for this course, will result in a corresponding letter grade assigned based upon the following percentage breakdown:

Examples of how you will be exposed to these concepts follow:

Communications: You will be required to write work orders in regard to customer problems and repair work completed. You will interact verbally with actual customers on a regular basis. You will learn and use appropriate industry terms to convey ideas and information about collision repair. You will also learn to prepare a resume, cover letter and general job application materials.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: You will be required to answer questions in class regarding the theory and application of collision repair techniques. You will determine the best way to repair a vehicle balancing the nature of the repair with the ability of the customer to pay.

Personal Ethics are stressed in everyday interaction with classmates and the school environment. You will be required to discuss your work as a collision repair technician from the perspective of a shop owner, as well as from the perspective of customers. Issues of safety, honesty, and appropriate work ethics will be part of these discussions.

Make ups--Since tests and quizzes have been scheduled well ahead of time, all students are expected to be present for them. Any make-up work will require approval of instructor. Make-up work can be scheduled ahead of time if the student knows that he/she will be unavailable and can show legitimate reasoning.


ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY AND DIRECTLY AFFECTS YOUR GRADE. It is assumed that adult college students will not miss classes. Attendance is being physically present from the beginning of the class session to the end of the class session. Participation in the learning activities would also be greatly appreciated.

The first 3 absences will not affect your grade (but you must call your instructor as early as possible to let them know you will not be in that day)

Each absence accrued after the allowable 3 listed above will take 5 total percentage points off of your final grade average.

Example: If you were a "B" student with an 85 grade average and you miss....

Missed classes add up quickly and can greatly affect your final grade!!! The instructor has discretion regarding excessive attendance issues with options including removal from the program or an incomplete.

DEFINITION OF AN ABSENCE: Student is not present in the class for any reason, except for school authorized events or previous instructor notification and approval. Students arriving in class 15 or more minutes late are considered to be absent.

DEFINITION OF A TARDY: Student has arrived in the class after the instructor has started the class session. 2 tardies = 1 absence.

Extended illness, emergencies, or extenuating circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Course Policies


1.     SAFETY FIRST!!  Follow all safety rules.  Safety rules will be taught during each section studied.  (See attached general safety rules sheet).

2.     Leather shoes are required in the shop.

3.     No profanity allowed in the classroom or lab.

4.     No sexist, racial, or ethnic jokes or comments allowed in the classroom or lab.

5.     No tobacco products are to be used in this building - NO CIGARETTES, PIPES, CIGARS, OR CHEWING TOBACCO!!

6.     No playing personal or customer radios, stereos. NO IPODS 

7.     Assigned projects must be completed.

8.     Neither the college nor the instructor is responsible for any breakage, theft, or fire.

9.     All vehicle keys must remain in the vehicle or with the instructor.          

  1. Students will not be permitted time during this course to work on their own vehicles.
  2. Cell phone use is not permitted in the classroom or lab.
  3. Students must use the time clock to check in and out for lunch and at the end of the day.

2.  Report all accidents to the instructor.

  • Where any injury where body fluids are visible: No first aid will be administered without proper protective measures such as wearing latex gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use safe practices around flammable materials and power equipment. 
  • Wash skin frequently with soap and water and avoid using solvents to clean skin. 
  • No horse play or running in the shop area; wet floors are slick! 
  • Use good housekeeping habits!
    • Keep aisles and walkways clear.  Hang up unused hoses.
    • Keep floors clean and picked up, discarding paper products, sandpapers, and discs.
    • Return materials and shop tools  to proper storage are 
  • All raised vehicles must have safety stand placed safely under them.
  • All students will participate in daily shop cleanings to ensure a safe environment.

3.   On Thursday  afternoons (weather permitting), all shop equipment and vehicles will be taken outside and a thorough shop cleaning will take place.  All students will participate!

An incomplete is assigned only if the student has been in attendance and has done satisfactory work to within three weeks of the end of the semester (or proportional length of time for a course of less than a semester in length).  Incompletes are issued only in cases of extenuating circumstances, such as severe illness or injury.  Incompletes are not issued in cases in which the student is simply unable to complete his/her work within the specified semester or session.  If a final grade of "I" is recorded, the instructor will indicate in writing to the Registrar what the student must do to make up the deficiency.  The instructor will indicate in the written statement what permanent grade should be entered if the Incomplete is not removed by the deadline.

All incomplete grades must be removed within six weeks after the first class day of the following term, excluding the summer session.  If the Incomplete is not removed by that date, the grade reverts to the grade indicated by the instructor's written statement authorizing the incomplete.

Institutional Statement

DROP FOR NON-PAYMENT:  By registering at North Idaho College, you agree to provide payment by the due dates. You will be dropped from classes if payment is not received by  5 p.m. Pacific Time on the third day of the semester. Students on the waitlist will be given the option to register for classes after students are dropped for non-payment.
