U.S. History After 1876 HIST-112

History 112 is an introductory survey of United States history from the Reconstruction era through the present. The objectives of this course are to ensure that students can identify the persons involved and the events that transpired, recognize the major themes (be they political, social, economic, or cultural) that shaped American after the Civil War, and most importantly, to comprehend why/how those themes occurred and what influenced citizens in the past to act as they did. Although this course is primarily designed for those pursuing an academic degree, the importance placed on critical thinking, the ability to weigh a variety of facts/evidence, and effective communicating (both in writing and verbally) will only help anyone in their daily lives and professional future. History 112 directly and indirectly pursues many of the General Education Abilities, especially points 1 (Critical/Creative Thinking), 2 (Communication), 4 (Historical, Cultural, Environmental Awareness), and 7(Information Literacy).
In compliance with the expectation that uniform student competencies be stated in all North Idaho College History syllabi, the following uniform outcomes are included:
The student should be geographically literate, that is able to locate the sites of significant historical events and to explain their geopolitical significance.
The student should be able to identify important historical individuals and their roles in history.
The student should be able to cite the causes and effects of significant historical events and their connections to subsequent events.
The student should be able to identify significant historical ideas and issues and their connections to subsequent developments.
The student should be able to synthesize information as demonstrated by competence in the following:
The ability to form value judgments or conclusions based on information
The ability to discriminate between fact and opinion
The ability to gain access to historical information required to arrive at and support conclusions
The ability to articulate conclusions in both written and spoken word
One quiz per week covering the material in the scheduled chapters.
Students can expect true/false and short answer types of questions.
Quizzes will have time limits.
The Voices of Freedom questions for Chapters 17, 23 (replacing Chapter 20), & 25 (replacing Chapter 27).
One forum per week.
A "mid-term" and a comprehensive final will be offered.
Students can expect multiple-choice and essay types of questions.

Online learning offers a high amount of flexibility, but it also requires a high level of self-discipline and commitment. Students are responsible for meeting all course deadlines, following all instructions, asking for help when needed. seeking the instructor's help when needed, and ultimatley for their own learning. The instructor will serve as a resource to students and offer guidance in their learning experience.
The two exams require the administration and supervision of an approved proctor. The NIC Testing Center and Outreach offices provide this service to online students.
It is the responsibility of each student to schedule an appointment with the Testing Center or Outreach office for each exam.
Students outside of the NIC area must contact the instructor before June 12 to make arrangements for proctoring.
Students may contact the instructor during office hours as indicated above by sending an email to the instructor's Angel mailbox. Messages sent outside of office hours can expect a reply within 24-hours excluding weekends and holidays.
The scores for activities that require manual-grading, e.g. assignments, forums, and assessments with essay questions or short answers, will be made available once all submissions have been graded. Students should expect at least one week before scores will be posted for those types of activities.
Students are expected to submit only their own work. When work is submitted that suggests unauthorized collaboration with others, then those involved risk loss of all available points.
Students are expected to summarize material from the textbook using their own words when submitting responses to VOF questions and for their Discussion postings.
Quotations within one's work should be avoided and can result in a reduction of points for the given activity and plagiarism will result in the loss of all points.

Students are required to have a working computer system and access to the internet for an online course. If a technical problem occurs, the instructor should be informed immediately of the problem.
The textbook is the only approved resource for course activities. The use of any outside source without the instructor's prior permission will result in the loss of points for the activity.
Language in the virtual classroom is expected to be civil and respectful toward all others. The use of any language regarded by the instructor as inappropriate for the classroom, may result not only in the offending individual’s loss of all points for the particular forum, but the offending individual may also be banned from participation in all future forums and the loss of all potential points associated with those forums.

Phone: 208-769-5947To withdraw from all courses a student must obtain a college withdrawal form from the Registrar's Office, secure the signatures of those persons indicated on the form, and return the form to the Registrar's office. No student may withdraw from the college after the final date of withdrawal from courses except for compelling and extraordinary reasons. In such circumstances a student must petition the Admissions and Academic Standards Committee for late withdrawal from college using the college withdrawal form available in the Registrar's Office.

An incomplete is assigned only if the student has been in attendance and has done satisfactory work to within three weeks of the end of the semester (or proportional length of time for a course of less than a semester in length). Incompletes are issued only in cases of extenuating circumstances, such as severe illness or injury. Incompletes are not issued in cases in which the student is simply unable to complete his/her work within the specified semester or session. If a final grade of "I" is recorded, the instructor will indicate in writing to the Registrar what the student must do to make up the deficiency. The instructor will indicate in the written statement what permanent grade should be entered if the Incomplete is not removed by the deadline.
All incomplete grades must be removed within six weeks after the first class day of the following term, excluding the summer session. If the Incomplete is not removed by that date, the grade reverts to the grade indicated by the instructor's written statement authorizing the incomplete.

DROP FOR NON-PAYMENT: By registering at North Idaho College, you agree to provide payment by the due dates. You will be dropped from classes if payment is not received by 5 p.m. Pacific Time on the third day of the semester. Students on the waitlist will be given the option to register for classes after students are dropped for non-payment.
DROP FOR NON-ATTENDANCE: You must attend and participate in the first week of this class. Failure to do so will result in your being dropped from this class and may result in your financial aid award being reduced. For Internet classes, attendance is based on participation in an instructional activity; you must complete the first week’s assignment(s) by the assignment due date. Drop for non-attendance occurs at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on the second Tuesday of the semester.
