Description


This course is a continuation of CAOT-216. Medical reports will be transcribed from six individual case studies covering the urinary, nervous, digestive, endocrine, lymphatic, and respiratory body systems. This is a required course for students in the Medical Administrative Assistant, Medical Receptionist, Medical Office Transcriptionist/Pre-Health Information Management Technician, and Medical Transcriptionist programs. Prerequisite: Complete CAOT-216 with a minimum grade of C-. Students may enroll and complete these courses during the same semester.

At the completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Transcribe with expediency and accuracy 8 common medical reports from 10 different specialties.
  • Proofread and correct medical reports to ensure accuracy.

Course Policies


Medical reports will be transcribed from five individual case studies each of which relates to a patient with a specific medical problem.  Each case contains between three and eight reports.  Students are encouraged to submit case reports as they complete them so that the reports can be graded and returned to prevent errors being carried from one report to the next.

At the completion of each of the five case studies, students will be given one word meaning test with questions directly related to that particular case. 

Students will be required to complete and turn in one proofreading exercise located at the end of the textbook per case completed, i.e., Proofreading Exercise 1 will be submitted with the completed Case 1 documents.

 The first timed test will be a timing of one randomly selected report from Cases 5 through 7.  Students are encouraged to study all graded reports to prepare for this timing. 

The final exam will consist of two new medical reports related to the medical specialties covered to be transcribed, proofread, and printed within 1 hour 50 minutes.

Online and published references, including the textbook, may be used during the timing and final exam, but no storage devices or previously graded reports can be accessed during these tests.

Because Medical Transcription requires the use of digital audio files and specialized transcribing hardware and software, students must plan to complete transcription exercises in the Flexible Learning Center.

Case 1 documents, proofreading, and quiz must be completed no later than the end of Week 3 (Sept. 13, 2012).

Case 2 documents, proofreading, and quiz must be completed no later than the end of Week 5 (Sept. 27, 2012)

Timing #1 must be completed no later than Oct. 4, 2012.

Case 3 documents, proofreading, and quiz must be completed by the middle of Week 7 (Oct. 9, 2012).

Case 4 documents, proofreading, quiz, and Final Timing for CAOT 216 must be completed by the end of Week 8 (Oct. 18, 2012).

CAOT 217

Case 5 documents, proofreading, and quiz must be completed by the end of Week 9 (Oct. 25, 2012).

Case 6 documents, proofreading, and quiz must be completed by the end of Week 10 (Nov. 1, 2012).

Case 7 documents, proofreading, quiz, and Timing #1 for CAOT 217 must be completed by the end of Week 12 (Nov. 15, 2012).

Case 9 documents, proofreading, and quiz must be completed by the end of Week 14 (Nov. 29, 2012).

Case 10 documents, proofreading, quiz, and Final Exam for CAOT 217 must be completed by the end of Week 16 (Thursday, Dec. 13).--Beware, the last day in the FLC is a zoo.  Try to avoid having to test on this day for your own sanity!

Last day for students to withdraw from semester-length classes for the fall term: November 12, 2012.

Incompletes

An incomplete is assigned only if the student has been in attendance and has done satisfactory work to within three weeks of the end of the semester (or proportional length of time for a course of less than a semester in length).  Incompletes are issued only in cases of extenuating circumstances, such as severe illness or injury.  Incompletes are not issued in cases in which the student is simply unable to complete his/her work within the specified semester or session.  If a final grade of "I" is recorded, the instructor will indicate in writing to the Registrar what the student must do to make up the deficiency.  The instructor will indicate in the written statement what permanent grade should be entered if the Incomplete is not removed by the deadline.

All incomplete grades must be removed within six weeks after the first class day of the following term, excluding the summer session.  If the Incomplete is not removed by that date, the grade reverts to the grade indicated by the instructor's written statement authorizing the incomplete.

DROP FOR NON-PAYMENT:  By registering at North Idaho College, you agree to provide payment by the due dates. You will be dropped from classes if payment is not received by  5 p.m. Pacific Time on the third day of the semester. Students on the waitlist will be given the option to register for classes after students are dropped for non-payment.

DROP FOR NON-ATTENDANCE:  You must attend and participate in the first week of this class. Failure to do so will result in your being dropped from this class and may result in your financial aid award being reduced. For Internet classes, attendance is based on participation in an instructional activity; you must complete the first week’s assignment(s) by the assignment due date. Drop for non-attendance occurs at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on the second Tuesday of the semester.
