Meeting Times


This course explores the concepts of stress from a holistic approach, emphasizing identification of sources of stress, understanding physical and emotional consequences, and developing techniques for dealing with stress. Students will gain improved personal stress management skills through discussion and practice in communication techniques, nutrition, exercise, relaxation, values clarification, and will learn strategies for dealing with change, loss, and enhancing self esteem. Lecture: 3 hours per week

At the completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate familiarity with basic terminology related to stress and stress managment
  2. Identify and understand the way different stressors impact our lives differently including psysiological, emotional and behavioral responses to stress.
  3. Conceptualize and discuss relevant aspects of culture and how various "social forces" influence stressors and our perception of them.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of stress-related disorders, their origin and treatment.
  5. Understand and identify stressors and the impact those stressors may have on health and wellness.
  6. Identify personal life styles behaviors and how those behaviors affect stress resistance and personal wellness.
  7. Identify and implement stress management techniques, including coping skills to control the impact of stressors.





Your grade is intended to reflect only your abilities and accomplishments in Psychology 223. Extra credit is available upon request.

*Be sure to speak with your instructor if you want to know how your extra credit points will be calculated into the weighted grading system. 

Late assignments are accepted at reduced credit unless you have a legitimate reason for being late. If you are late and you think you have a legitimate reason, please see me privately or send an e-mail to me.

Course Policies

Classroom Code of Conduct (Face to Face Classes Only)

         I.            Paying tuition gives the student the right to sit in their seat and learn. It does not give them the right to disrupt the learning experiences of other students, who have also paid their tuition, and it does not entitle them to a grade.

        II.            If you are subjected to another student’s disruptive behavior, please see your instructor about a student complaint form. You have a right to sit and your seat and learn without being harassed, and you have a right to say something if you think another student’s behavior is disruptive.  Please note that, depending on existing policies and the evidence presented to the instructor, a complaint form may or may not result in disciplinary action.

      III.            If you feel the need to be disruptive in the classroom environment, drop this class and take another one before it’s too late. This classroom has a zero tolerance policy for disruptive behavior. Disciplinary action will be taken on the first offense. Disruptive behavior is defined as:

A.       No socializing or talking during class lectures.

B.       No socializing during activities. Talking is limited to the learning experience.

C.        No use of cell phones period. Don’t bring them into the classroom.

D.       No leaving the classroom during class. Come prepared to attend class.

E.        No use of computers outside of academic applications (i.e. if another student complains about your misuse of your computer, this will be considered a first offense).

F.        No sleeping during class. If you must sleep, stay home and sleep.

G.       No disruptive noises or disruptive behaviors of any kind. You have the right to sit in your seat and pay attention. That’s what you paid for. If you’re not sure if a behavior or noise is disruptive, ask your instructor before performing it.

      IV.            Students who have accommodations through the CEA (Center for Educational Access) may not necessarily be required to follow all of the codes of conduct if one or more of the code interferes with their ability to learn effectively in the classroom environment.

A.       Other students are not privy to this information

B.       All student information, including accommodations, are protected by FERPA (Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

C.        The Instructor is not required to explain why a student is not following a particular code of conduct if said divulgence would result in a violation of FERPA.

*Attendance: It’s required for all non-internet courses

Class starts on time and ends on time. There are no “Days off.” If you miss a day, see me right away about make-up work to earn points for your grade. If you miss more than 2 days, your final grade will drop one whole letter grade for each additional day missed. Example: if you have 3 absences that are not made up, and you’ve earned an “A” in the class, then your final grade will be a “B”. Remember that 3 tardies is equal to 1 missed day.

To withdraw from all courses a student must obtain a college withdrawal form from the Registrar's Office, secure the signatures of those persons indicated on the form, and return the form to the Registrar's office. No student may withdraw from the college after the final date of withdrawal from courses except for compelling and extraordinary reasons. In such circumstances a student must petition the Admissions and Academic Standards Committee for late withdrawal from college using the college withdrawal form available in the Registrar's Office.

Center for Educational Access/Disability Support Services

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504/508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, North Idaho College provides accommodations to eligible students who experience barriers in the educational setting due to learning, emotional / mental, physical, visual, or hearing disabilities.  Instructors will provide accommodations to students only after having received a Letter of Accommodation from the Center for Educational Access.

Instructor-Initiated Withdrawal: Instructors have the right to withdraw students for academic reasons up until the same date; in doing so, instructors must notify students through NIC e-mail within 48 hours of submitting documentation to the Registrar's office, and students have the right to appeal the instructor's decision. For more information, see the NIC Procedure:

An incomplete is assigned only if the student has been in attendance and has done satisfactory work to within three weeks of the end of the semester (or proportional length of time for a course of less than a semester in length).  Incompletes are issued only in cases of extenuating circumstances, such as severe illness or injury.  Incompletes are not issued in cases in which the student is simply unable to complete his/her work within the specified semester or session.  If a final grade of "I" is recorded, the instructor will indicate in writing to the Registrar what the student must do to make up the deficiency.  The instructor will indicate in the written statement what permanent grade should be entered if the Incomplete is not removed by the deadline.

All incomplete grades must be removed within six weeks after the first class day of the following term, excluding the summer session.  If the Incomplete is not removed by that date, the grade reverts to the grade indicated by the instructor's written statement authorizing the incomplete.

Institutional Statement

DROP FOR NON-PAYMENT:  By registering at North Idaho College, you agree to provide payment by the due dates. You will be dropped from classes if payment is not received by  5 p.m. Pacific Time on the third day of the semester. Students on the waitlist will be given the option to register for classes after students are dropped for non-payment.

REMOVAL FROM CLASS FOR NON-ATTENDANCE:  Attendance is based on your participation in this class. Failure to attend may result in your being removed from this class and may result in your financial aid award being reduced. You are responsible for confirming the accuracy of your attendance record.
